Tuesday, I have the joy of adding 25 more per cut making it 125 times 7...1000 cuts here I come. Just thinking about it makes me want to stretch.

Sounds pretty intense but does seem like a good idea. I know I need to increase the # of reps I do when I practice the cuts.

True. Edge alignment is very important. We all want that triple cut XD I'll see you guys on friday!

I always stretch before cutting, using simple yoga streches, and it really helps to get loose and relaxed. I've also learned some breathing techniques from a Tai Chi cat. Breathing is very much so connected to proper form, I think. I sometimes have to remind myself. I used to hold my breath when cutting, which had a very negative impact, to say the least. Excellent post, Rook.

I can keep an edge on a blade by using an arkansas white stone. It is one heck of a process to use the sandpapers and stones to do a complete polish. I have several blades that are so beautiful, that I have never cut with them, simply 'cause I don't want the superficial scratches. It's funny, I have a few swords that seems to get SHARPER with use. I know this can't be the case, but it just seems like it. It may be because I don't botch as many cuts as I used too.

You gotta have all the right stuff. For me, I found that sandpaper is pretty much only good for polishing up the shinogi ji. For the ji, stones are a must. If you rub the wrong way with the sandpaper, it'll tear and mess up the ha and you gotta go back and fix it. I just sharpened up my katsumoto katana and put a yokote line back on it, but the polish is horrible because I only have a 1000 grit stone right now. I'm waiting on a 4000 grit stone to come so that I can at least try to do some decent polishing. I want to try to get into nigui and all that stuff for hadori or sashikomi but I just don't have the materials right now to do so (and experience >.<) So I gotta say that I agree with you for right now Glen. I'll bring my katsumoto down to the shop today. See you later!

I hear you. This is something I feel some guilt over. I mean, ya I can touch up an edge, have even put a decent edge on swords that didn't have one, but properly polishing a blade; not even close. I am content if the sword performs well.

Ha, nice gifts to give and to get, Rook.
One gift of note I got for my baby bro was an aligator head from an eleven foot gator! I'm gonna put candy and razors and odd ball stuff like that in the mouth, which is open.
This thing is scary lookin'! I got it on Ebay for 20.00.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, be it Christmas or Kwanza or Festivus for the Restofus!

I am currently working on formalizing the sword art part of my training as best I can. I keep written logs of everything I do training and teaching but the sword stuff has been a little like footnotes. Paying more attention, I am seeing some things that need to be addressed. I will share as this unfolds.

What I really need to do is train when not just cutting targets. I have recently started working on ghost draw cuts, practicing the movements with an iaito very slowly and then gradually moving up to real time. I am in all honesty leary of this cut, because it is so easy to slice through the saya and then tragedy WILL strike. I am really taking my time while developing this cut, so that I can do it with confidence and keep all of my digits in tact.

Nice blog Glenn. I do look at rolling mats as a chore but I think you are right that it should not be. It should be preparation for training.
