Soak Times

Rate this Entry
Consistent targets are invaluable for cutting. It is difficult to anticipate the reaction of your target if it has lumps, and dry spots. After several months of trial and error the Rook was able to find the perfect soak times for the striped tatami.

First off, for a single roll split the mats (the mats come in a double roll size).

Next, roll the mats using a dowel or broom stick. This will not only leave a hole for the peg but also smooth out the roll.

Tie off the mats with around 5-7 lengths of twine or string. Be sure to tie the twine tight, especially around both ends of the mat.

Soak the mats, fully immersed, for three days. If you are feeling ambitious you can change out the water each day.

Pull out mats and enjoy.

We have also found that these mats cut best when wet.

Now that we have finally gotten down the soak cycle of the striped mats we have switched to the brown wara. Back to square one. But, this is all part of the fun.

Ya the striped ones are great to cut but seem to absorb water more slowly. Just cut a couple yesterday, about 24 hours soaked in the cold. ( [garage] Seems to me that soaking mats in the winter takes a little longer? ) I will give the next ones a longer swim.
